BPMA – Introduction

The BPMA project (bio-prospecting marine macro-algae for cultivation and use of the raw material) was approved in September 2013, funded by the IDE through the Conhecimento + (Knowledge +) program, which recovered in Madeira the activity of using algae for therapeutic and food purposes. This project was integrated exploration, collection, cultivation and evaluation of specific groups of marine macro-algae in Madeira for the bio- functional components extraction and to develop methodologies and processes to domesticate the cultivation of algae. We conducted several surveys around the island of Madeira and identified 13 different species with market potential.
